What’s inside

Five chapters
on the machines.

A node keeps the entire ledger — every transaction since January 2009 — and checks each new block against the rules before accepting a line of it. There is no institution on earth that can show a node runner a false Bitcoin. The film runs three minutes and twenty-three seconds; the chapters go further.

  1. IThe LedgerA node is Bitcoin, whole, in your own hands — every transaction since January 2009, checked against the rules before a line of it is accepted.
  2. IIThe RulesTwenty-one million, enforced by the nodes. Miners order transactions; nodes decide what counts as Bitcoin.
  3. IIIThe CountMore than 77,000 machines announce themselves, and estimates including the quiet ones run past 100,000. None of them holds rank.
  4. IVThe Quiet PartVerification is also privacy. A wallet without its own node has to ask a stranger’s server which coins are yours.
  5. VTime in BlocksThe house calendar is not Gregorian. Bitcoin keeps its own time, one block at a time.
